Why won't people help their "neighbors"? And has the definition of cheating gone out the window?

This issue has got me fired up tonight. We're taught to "Love Thy Neighbor", right? This includes helping out a "neighbor" in need, right?
Tonight as I was going through one of my class emails I came upon some appalling messages. The class is meteorology and it's not particularly easy. Someone was reaching out to ask if any of his fellow classmates had taken the first exam yet and to get "insight" on how it went. I wished I had taken the test so that I could let him know if it was hard or easy for me. THAT'S ALL HE WANTED TO KNOW!!! I then proceeded to read the other emails and SEVERAL people in this class started tearing into this kid about how he needs to grow up and that it would be cheating if they told him whether the test was hard or not. COME ON!!! Since when has helping out someone in need become so taboo? And have they changed the definition of cheating lately? Do people REALLY act this way in college? I would expect this behavior in a preschooler!
